But as milder air attempts to move north into southern and central areas, snow may turn to a spell of freezing rain, adding to the risk of ice and slippery surfaces.

Any snow in southern parts is likely to be short-lived and could turn into rain.

Residents are advised to check their route and to pack essential items before travelling.

Gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items is advisable for those remaining at home.

Meanwhile at midday yesterday (Thursday) the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued an amber cold health alert.

It will remain in place until midday on Wednesday (January 8).

The alerts are issued when the forecast weather is “likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services”.

The low temperatures forecast over the next week are expected to lead to pressure on health services, particularly by vulnerable and elderly people.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “The forecasted temperatures can have a serious impact on the health of some people, including those aged 65 and over and those with pre-existing health conditions, and it is therefore vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable.

“These people could be more at risk of heart attacks, stroke and chest infections as a result of cold temperatures.”

Three flood alerts also remain in place across the district.

This means flooding is possible.

The alerts are for groundwater flooding in the Great Shefford area; the Lambourn Valley catchment and in West Ilsley, East Ilsley, Compton, Chilton and West Hagbourne.
