Would-be thieves tried to steal hospital chapel donation box

Northumbria Police received a report of an attempted theft which is believed to have taken place between 9pm on Wednesday, January 9 and 7.30am on Thursday, January 9 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Offenders allegedly entered the hospital’s chapel area before trying to remove a donation box from the wall, but were unsuccessful in their attempt left the building.

A spokesperson from Gateshead NHS Trust said: “The attempted theft was discovered by our chaplains and reported to Northumbria Police. 

“We have CCTV footage available and we are supporting the police with their ongoing investigations.

“Our chapel area is open 24 hours a day to offer a quiet reflective space for staff, patients, and visitors to the hospital during challenging times. It is disappointing that someone would seek to exploit this.”
