The funding, part of the UK Government’s Project Gigabit, will be delivered in partnership with Openreach.
This investment is expected to propel Worcestershire’s gigabit broadband coverage beyond 90 per cent.
If successful the initiative will see Worcestershire County Council hit its 90 per cent target by December 2027, in line with the national goal of 100 per cent coverage by 2030.
Councillor Adam Kent, cabinet member for the economy at the council, said: “I’m delighted to see this transformative investment in Worcestershire’s digital infrastructure.
“Our broadband improvement programme has already made a real impact, with more homes and businesses than ever accessing faster, more reliable internet.
“This latest funding means we can go even further, enabling our residents and businesses to embrace the digital opportunities of the future.
“Through the combination of private and public investment, we’re future-proofing Worcestershire’s connectivity, keeping us competitive and ensuring our communities can thrive in the digital age.”
The project builds on Worcestershire’s broadband roll-out, with areas like Bromsgrove, Redditch, and Worcester City Districts already boasting gigabit coverage rates of 88.2 per cent, 93.28 per cent, and 88.8 per cent respectively—well above the UK average of 85.87 per cent.
The county is on track to meet the Government’s 2025 target of 85 per cent coverage, and the new funding is expected to help accelerate the progress.
Funds will also go towards extending coverage into rural communities, ensuring they are connected, the council has also said.
For rural businesses, the coverage could unlock opportunities for innovation, enhance productivity, and open doors to global markets.
Gigabit-capable broadband provides faster, more reliable internet connections.
