Worcestershire college launches initiative to help students get jobs

Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) has introduced the 5Cs initiative for the current academic year.

The framework aims to equip students with the core skills most valued by employers.

The 5Cs, created in collaboration with students, staff, and potential employers, focus on critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and company behaviours.

These are designed to ensure students are work-ready, and have critical 21st-century skills employers seek.

Michelle Dowse, principal and CEO of the college, said: “The 5Cs initiative reflects our commitment to preparing students not just for jobs, but for successful, impactful careers.

“By focusing on these essential skills, we ensure our students are confident, adaptable, and ready to thrive in any professional environment.”

The initiative aligns with the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), addressing the skills gap many employers face.

Sharon Smith, chief executive of Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The launch of the 5Cs initiative by HoW College is a fantastic step forward in addressing the skills gap that many employers are currently facing.

“Businesses in our region have long expressed the need for candidates who not only have technical proficiency but also possess critical soft skills, such as effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to think creatively and solve problems.

“Research conducted through the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) further highlights these needs, with many businesses identifying these core skills as key to driving productivity and growth.”
