Worcester City beat Liverpool 66 years ago on this day

Inserting themselves alongside the famous ‘giant killing’ score lines in FA Cup history, The Faithful triumphed over Second Division Liverpool 2-1.

Playing in the Southern League at the time, City had already shocked many in the second round of the competition – when they beat Fourth Division Millwall at St Georges Lane 5-2.

Prior to that result, they saw off Chelmsford City in a replay.

The third round tie with Liverpool was initially called off due to weather conditions – something that City fans today are also well acquainted with.

The midweek replay occurred on this day (January 15) in 1959, setting a record attendance for St Georges Lane at the time.

Going on to finish fourth in the Second Division that season, Liverpool were expected to stroll through the game and triumph over City. But Worcester opened the scoring just nine minutes into the tie.

18-year-old Tommy Skuse turned the ball home to give The Faithful a shock lead.

Liverpool came close just before the break – hitting the woodwork, but it was City who were holding strong to go into half time a goal to the good.

Worcester’s defensive display continued into the second half, where their advantage was doubled with just nine minutes to play.

Liverpool’s Dick White, looking to clear the ball, lobbed his own keeper and sent City 2-0 up.

Liverpool did get one back before the final whistle as Geoff Twentyman scored from the penalty spot, however it wasn’t enough to stop The Faithful progressing through to the fourth round of the cup.

Speaking to The Daily Mail after the game, Liverpool boss Phil Taylor said: “We lost because our forwards showed no fight. We have no grumbles about the ground, which was as good as any in the country at this time.”

The victory set City up to play Sheffield United in the next round. They lost the bout 2-0, setting a new record home attendance of 17,042.

The loss played a key part as Liverpool parted ways with Phil Taylor later that year. However the result may even be looked back on fondly by Liverpool’s fans as Taylor’s vacant position was taken on by Bill Shankly.

Worcester City’s starting line up on the night: John Kirkwood, Eddie Wilcox, Reg Potts, Sammy Bryceland, Les Melville, Roy Paul, Tommy Brown, Eddie Follan, Harry Knowles, Bernard Gosling, Tommy Skuse.
