Worcester Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival winner crowned

The tree, crafted by Jason Saunders of Wise Fabrication Ltd in Halesowen, was selected as the People’s Choice from more than 150 entries.

The festival, which ended on Monday, January 6, saw schools, charities, businesses, and organisations compete in the biggest event yet.

A new token voting system was introduced for 2024, and combined with Facebook likes, Saunders’ tree amassed 1,828 votes.

Mr Saunders, who spent around 160 hours creating the tree, was thrilled with the win.

He said: “I decided to enter after visiting with my daughter Winnie last year and noticing there wasn’t anything made from steel.

“It was a personal challenge and I was excited to be able to add something a little different to the line-up.”

Despite not knowing what design to go for initially, Mr Saunders was determined to push himself to new depths in his smithing career.

He began forging hot steel over the anvil in October, overcoming late deliveries, fast-changing weather conditions, and even a flooded workshop.

His biggest inspiration was the thought of his daughter Winnie seeing his creation in the cathedral.

He said: “Winnie had watched me work on the tree for weeks.

“One of my biggest inspirations was the thought of Winnie’s face seeing something inside the beautiful cathedral that daddy had made.

“Not telling her my tree was there, her face lit up when she saw it for the first time when we visited.

“That was everything I had worked for.”

Mr Saunders was unaware of the competition element of the festival, and said he had already won when he saw Winnie’s reaction.

He added: “I am truly humbled and very grateful for all the votes and all the nice things people have said to me.

“The Christmas Tree Festival is so magical to me now.

“I look forward to taking part next year with a bigger, more detailed and harder design forged tree.

“Thank you all, I am very blessed and very grateful.”
