Winchester cafe shuts due to economic difficulties

Inn the Park, which launched during the pandemic in October 2020, has decided to shut up shop due to a combination of “personal events” and “economic factors”.

The site is comprised of an open-grill restaurant, bar, gallery and wine training school.

Eleanor Dodd from Inn the Park said: “We’ve made the very difficult decision to close our doors and, after four fantastic years, the time has come for us to pass on the baton.

“We want to thank our dedicated team, local suppliers and of course, all the guests who helped make so many brilliant memories at Inn the Park.”

Inn the Park in Abbey Gardens, Winchester, has announced its closure (Image: Sebastian Haw) Inn the Park cited economic factors as the main reason for the closure, with the last four years having weighed heavily on the hospitality industry. Covid restrictions, staff shortages caused by Brexit and soaring utility and food costs have all contributed to difficulties for business owners.

Eleanor added: “We’re gutted to close. All our suppliers and staff have been paid and we feel it is the right decision.

“Large hospitality venues like Inn the Park not only bring social connection and provide a community hub but also provide essential local employment & support local food and other supply chains.”

In a statement on its website, Inn the Park wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that we would like to inform our friends and customers that we have taken the difficult decision to remain closed after the Christmas break.

“Since taking over this site from River Cottage during lockdown in 2020, we have worked tirelessly to provide Winchester folk with an innovative, vibrant, and hospitable drinking and dining venue.

“Unfortunately, after a series of very personal events combined with much- commented on economic factors out of our control, it now means that we will have to pass on the baton and move on to new adventures.

“We would like to thank all our guests, suppliers and most importantly our team who have supported us and been a part of Inn the Park over the past four years.

“Please spare a thought and support other local independent businesses in the next few months as trading conditions with recent legislation and increased costs continue to make things more difficult.

“Be kind.”

The site is being marketed by Savills.
