Where can I find free grit for ice in Glasgow?

The bins contain grit which, when scattered on ice, will clear the pavement and make it safer to walk on. 

Thew free grit is supplied in addition to the regular ice-clearing which the local authority carries out on roads and pathways.

These are routinely replenished during the winter period, and QR codes can be used to request a refill or replace a damaged grit bin. 

Glasgow City Council has an interactive map to help people find their nearest grit bin.

A spokesman for the council said: “We have over 1600 grit bins circulated around the city for residents to help themselves and safeguard their local community against the impact of winter weather. 

“Grit is often an effective measure against snow and ice and the provision of grit bins play a significant role in keeping the city moving during the winter months. 

“During to extended periods of severe winter weather we can also drop off one tonne sacks of grit at places around the city for residents to use. 

“Our staff work round the clock to deliver our winter plan, which focuses our efforts on a network priority roads, footpaths and cycle ways.”
