What’s On Roundup 11-17 January 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week with Leeds Dads who will be holding their first free Soft Play session of the year, 10am-12pm on Saturday morning at Little Angels behind the Tommy Wass pub, LS11 7HL. This for dads and pre-school children and there’s free tea and toast! Book: leedsdads.org/events

Trinity Network host their Community Reflections Café on Saturday 10am-12pm at the United reformed Church, Nesfield Avenue, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG

Semi-professional South Leeds FC match against Maltby Main FC on Saturday at South Leeds Stadium has been postponed due to the frozen ground.

Leeds United entertain Harrogate Town in an intriguing FA Cup tie on Saturday, kicking off at 5:45pm. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after the match.

St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD are serving up their monthly family breakfast at 9:30am, you can stay for morning worship at 10:30am, but you’re not obliged to.

Sunday also sees the monthly Farmers Market running from 10am-4pm with lots of good food straight from the producers, at Armouries Square, Leeds Dock, LS10 1LT.

The 200th anniversary of the Gosforth Pit Disaster will be commemorated at a Memorial Service at St Mary’s Church, Middleton, LS10 3TJ at 2pm on Sunday.

Hunslet RLFC’s pre-season friendly against York City Knights has also been called off due to the frozen pitch.

Moving on to where the pitch is always frozen, on Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Bristol Pitbulls. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road. The Knights play again at home against the Sheffield Steeldogs on Friday at 7:30pm.

The SEN-Tastic group meets on Thursday. It’s open to anyone who cares for children with special needs, parents, siblings, carers, childminders and grandparents and offers coffee, friendship, advice and support. The group runs from 9:15-10:30am at St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, Beeston, LS11 8PD.

Leeds Baby Bank will be at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library on Thursday 10am-12pm offering support to people to access support services, community activity and longer-term support. They also gift families an essential top-up of items like nappies, wipes, formula and toiletries.

Beeston Festival is holding its Annual General Meeting on Thursday at 6pm at St Peter’s Court, Dewsbury Road, LS11 5NR. The organising committee reported before Christmas that they were losing two key members, if you’re thinking of stepping up to help this is a great way of finding out more about what’s involved.

The St Luke’s Tenants & Residents Association will be holding their bi-monthly meeting on Thursday at St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, LS11 8PD, starting at 6:30pm.

And finally, Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club are starting free training sessions for children aged 5-9 years old. It takes place at Cockburn School, Gipsy Lane, Beeston, LS11 5TT on Friday evenings from 6-7pm. For more information contact 07795 061182.
