Watch elusive European Otter eating fish in Worcester

The European Otter was spotted on a tree trunk close to the River Severn in Worcester on January 4.

The video shows the ‘rare animal’ eating what appears to be a fish before returning to the water.

Less than a week ago another resident of Worcester saw an otter ‘relaxing’ in the sun near Diglis.

Speaking at the time Julia Everest said: “I spotted the animal on my walk to Diglis this morning (January 12).

“I saw something from quite far away on the other side of the river and I went to investigate.

“It turned out to be an otter which I thought was really strange and I thought I was seeing things.

“Another walker stopped to take a look as well but after five minutes it had had enough and dived off.

“It was really lovely to see and it’s nice to know they are around.”

Whilst otter numbers are on the rise they remain elusive and are only spotted by lucky members of the public according to the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust.

A spokesperson for the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust said: “Sightings of otters in Worcester, particularly when the Severn is in flood, have become more common in recent years.

“It’s not that long ago that otters were almost extinct in the UK, including here in Worcestershire by the 1980s. This was mostly down to a cocktail of pesticides in rivers and, therefore, the food chain that otters depend upon as well as deliberate persecution. Following the banning of the worst-offending pesticides and legal protection of otters from hunting, their populations bounced back.

“Otters are now back in every river in the county although they remain elusive and are usually only seen by lucky members of the public. When rivers are in flood, however, their resting and nesting places may be underwater and hunting in turbulent water becomes more difficult; this can make them more visible to passers-by.”
