Warrington council leader writes to Government on floods

Hans Mundry has written to Government following the devastating new year flooding in town.

Areas around Bewsey, Dallam, Sankey Bridges, Great Sankey, Lymm and Croft were among those hit hardest by the flooding.

More than 140 people had to be rescued from properties on New Year’s Day as waters rose.

Now Cllr Mundry says proactive flood defence investment could help in any future flooding.

Hotspots in Longshaw Street, Southworth Avenue and Hawleys Lane were again under water.

He said: “The current arrangements for agreeing on flood relief schemes are slow and cumbersome and involve a number of different national/regional organisations and agencies.

“In addition, in the context of the government’s mission regarding the Net Zero challenges and climate change, drainage and flood relief investments, in my view, require greater priority.

“I believe that rapid improvement could occur if there was an urgent grant review of the funding arrangements for the investment in drainage/flood relief schemes.

“Councils like my own have to make significant capital contributions to individual capital schemes by borrowing.

“Given the austerity measures of the previous government, this is not sustainable.

“Secondly, I would be grateful if you would consider supporting the inclusion in the forthcoming devolution agreement for Cheshire & Warrington that the current Defra funding for flood relief be included.

“This would allow the Mayoral Strategic Authorities to make more effective and efficient decisions regarding drainage and flood relief investments.”

The letter was copied to three local MPs, Charlotte Nichols MP (Warrington North), Sarah Hall MP (Warrington South), and Esther McVey MP (Tatton).
