With the beloved detective finding herself in so many difficult situations, Brenda made use of a body double who undertook various stunts as well as a lot of the driving in later seasons.

Millions tuned in on Thursday night to see the long-running ITV crime drama come to an end.

The Vera episode saw the famous character leave her job with Northumberland and City Police, quietly clearing out her office for good.

Leaving for the final time with a box of her possessions in hand, she left a note for her sidekick Joe telling him it was time for him “to spread his wings”.

Despite the end of the programme, fans were treated to a documentary called Vera, Farewell Pet.

The special gave a behind-the-scenes look at the show, including the use of stunt doubles for both Brenda and David.

Jonathan Larman, who doubles for David said: “When we’re out about sometimes people think we’re the real deal, which is quite amusing.”

Vera has come to an end but fans can stream all the episodes on ITVX and STV Player.
