Here are five of the show’s stars who have made it big since appearing on the show.
Cush Jumbo
Jumbo appeared as DC Bethany Whelan in series two starring alongside Brenda Blethyn’s titular character.
She returned to the show for series five, broadcast in 2015, and for episode one of series six in 2016 where she clashed with Vera over her ambitions to transfer to major crimes, before a run in with a suspect.
She has appeared in The Good Wife and The Good Fight since appearing on Vera and has also recently starred in AppleTV show Criminal Record alongside Peter Capaldi.

Kingsley Ben-Adir
Ben-Adir has been propelled to stardom after appearing in Vera, with roles in blockbuster hit Barbie in 2023 as well as Marvel series Secret Invasion. He also starred as Bob Marley in a biopic about the singer’s life
Ben-Adir appeared in 16 episodes of Vera as Dr. Marcus Summer from 2014-2018.

Jodie Comer
Killing Eve star Jodie Comer is arguably one of the most recognisable British actors and is set to star in Danny Boyle movie 28 Years Later – filmed in the North East – which comes out in June.
In Vera, Comer played the girlfriend of an extreme sports fanatic, who died after he was seen by a group of campers jumping into a lake while on fire.

Paul Ritter
The late Paul Ritter was an unlikely national treasure for his role in Friday Night Dinner as dad Martin. He received a posthumous BAFTA nomination for his role on the show.
On Vera, he played pathologist Dr. Billy Cartwright, who was a key part of DCI Stanhope’s team for the first three series of the show.
Ritter sadly died in 2021 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Sam Fender
North East cult icon Sam Fender has shot to global fame as a rock and roll star, earning comparisons to Bruce Springsteen for his brand of personal music rooted in his experience as a working class lad from North Shields.
Fender starred in the first ever episode of the show, playing the first dead body that DCI Stanhope has to work with.
