South Ayrshire Council has applied for listed building consent to replace one of the vehicle gates at the Holmston Road cemetery.
Planning documents reveal that the gate was left in a “potentially dangerous condition” after being struck by a vehicle.
They add: “The entrance is formed of three arches, the left hand and right hand of these being pedestrian entrances and the central arch forming a larger vehicle access.
“The boundary walls and entrance, including gates, are all category C listed, denoting they are of local importance.
“This statement is written to support an application for listed building consent to replace one of the original vehicle access gates to the cemetery from Holmston Road.

“As an emergency measure, South Ayrshire Council instructed removal of the damaged gate to protect the public.
“The badly damaged gate was removed and transported to a local metalworkers yard until the condition of the gate could be fully assessed.
“Due to the dangerous condition of the gate following the collision it had to be taken apart to allow safe handling and transportation. The gate is now in multiple pieces.”
Plans also reveal that the drop bolt on the gate is damaged “beyond repair”, and that a new bolt will be created and installed to match the original.
The gates will be returned to their original black colour, and the structures will match what was previously there.
The statement continues: “The replacement of the damaged gate with a new matching gate and replacement of the missing and damaged decorative fleur-de-lis finials will ensure the historic appearance of the entrance to Ayr Cemetery is preserved.”
