United Utilities’ message to those without water this morning

The water provider has provided an update after many also experienced ‘trickling’ taps amid freezing temperatures on the coldest day of the year so far.

A spokesman said: “Due to the recent freezing weather conditions, some of our customers have called to say their water has gone off, or it is coming out the tap in a trickle.

“This could be due to frozen pipes in your home.

“If you think your pipes may be frozen but they have not split or burst, there are some simple steps you can take.

“To help slowly thaw them, use a hot water bottle or hairdryer, starting from the end nearest your tap.

“Remember to avoid using a naked flame as this may not be safe.”

United Utilities added: “Our region is being affected by freezing weather conditions. Please remember we are not the only ones prone to feeling the cold.

“Pipes inside and outside your home can get very cold too and even freeze causing your water supply to go off.

“Check with your neighbours. If they have water, it suggests you have a frozen pipe in your property.

“Now, turn off your stop tap, which is usually found under your kitchen sink, then turn on your cold tap in the kitchen.

“If it is safe to do so, use a hairdryer set to warm or a hot water bottle to thaw the pipe. This can take about 15 minutes. Switch your stop tap back on to see if the water is running.”
