UK could make bigger effort to reducing CO2, says reader

And of this about 0.5 per cent is from transport of which 0.25 is from the motor car.

The government is hell-bent on forcing the British public to buy electric vehicles.

A lot of these vehicles are coming from China and the USA with both powering their factories from electricity produced by burning fossil fuels.

China is building something like one coal-fired power station every two months and therefore is increasing its CO2 output in excess of any reduction the UK will make.

I think the UK could make a bigger contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in this way.

It could stop the import of cars or solar panels manufactured in China or the USA until they reduce their use of fossil fuels, especially coal.

While we are increasing our imports of products produced in these countries we are encouraging them to carry on building coal-burning power stations.

This is a global problem and needs a global solution.

This government is making the problem worse by adopting a policy that allows other countries to increase their CO2 output to supply us with products to help us reduce our CO2 output.

This is a futile exercise and achieves the opposite.

The British public suffers and politicians will not do what is really required.

That is to force the likes of China, India and the USA to reduce fossil fuel consumption by one or two per cent.

This would have a bigger impact on global warming than us reducing by 100 per cent.
