Two swans lose their lives after ‘vicious dog attacks’

The Bray-based wildlife charity, Swan Support, rushed to the incidents when  passers-by reported the attacks.

Owner, Wendy Hermon stated online that one of the swan’s injuries were the ‘worst we have seen in all the years we have been rescuing’.

Due to the extent of their injuries, the charity was forced to put them to sleep. They both left behind their mates and cygnets.

She said: “All so unnecessary. Police are aware.”

Hermon has previously said in an interview with the Slough Observer: “We’re having regular meetings with Thames Valley Police. Out main issue was we didn’t think TVP were doing enough for wildlife crime compared to other police forces.”

Ms Hermon claims that when the charity – which rescues injured birds – reported incidents, police would log the complaint but do little to investigate.

It is currently illegal to kill or maim swans across the UK as they are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it illegal to intentionally harm, kill, or disturb them.

Any act of harming a swan is a wildlife-related offense.

This is just two of many times that the charity was called out to incidents across the Thames Valley region and beyond to rescue and help swans and other wildlife.

They were called out three times in the space of a few hours to assist Network Rail with swans landing on/near the tracks all a few hundred metres apart during the bad weather.

One came in for treatment and the other 2 released to a nearby flock.
