Tributes to Bishop Auckland teacher after tumour diagnosis

Tributes have flooded in for “forever loved” St Anne’s CE Primary and Nursery School teacher Owen Browell from Darlington following his passing.

The dad of two, originally from the Wirral, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer that had advanced to stage four in February 2024.

Breaking the news, the school penned an emotional statement paying tribute to his life and his love for teaching.

They wrote: “It is with great sadness that we share the devastating news of the passing of Mr Browell.

“Mr Browell was an exceptional teacher, a cherished colleague, and a dear friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“His unwavering dedication to his pupils and his passion for teaching have left an indelible mark on countless lives.

“He had a unique ability to inspire, guide, and care for every child in his care and his impact will be felt for generations to come.

“To our St Anne’s community, we know how deeply this loss will be felt. Mr Browell’s warmth, patience, and genuine love for his work and the people around him were extraordinary. His pupils adored him and his colleagues admired his kindness, humour, and ability to lift others up. Beyond the classroom, he was a true friend to all and a cornerstone of our school family.

“In his final act of kindness, Mr Browell gave the extraordinary gift of organ donation, a testament to the selfless and compassionate person he was.

“Even in passing, his generosity will save and transform the lives of others, leaving a legacy of hope and love that reflects the values he lived by every day. This final gesture speaks volumes about the incredible heart he had, one that will continue to touch lives in ways beyond measure.
