Mr Thomas had been chairman of Long Melford Football Club since 2020.

He was known for his cheerful ways, sense of humour, leadership and determination.

Club president, Richard Kemp, said: “The news has come as a shock to everyone and is just numbing.

“Geoff was an amazing man, a brave man and a fighter in everything he did.

“Being chairman at a village club is a difficult task, with the survival of the club both on and off the field. He was a beacon of hope.

Mr Thomas, who suffered diabetes, had his leg amputated two years ago due to the condition.

But this didn’t stop him with his club duties, also as treasurer – or performing as vocalist with his band, Bad Old Dad.

“Despite a personal setback in recent times, Geoff carried on his tasks with great fortitude and always a cheerful attitude,” added Mr Kemp.

“His band toured the country and were very successful performing 70s and 80s covers, and as a Searchers tribute act. He also used to do a great Tina Turner impersonation

“Geoff was extremely popular: affable, amiable and determined. He also had a great sense of humour.”

Mr Thomas, who lived in Marks Tey, Essex, was due to celebrate his 78th birthday this month. He leaves behind widow, Helen, two children, and grandchildren.

Son Darren is the current joint-manager of Long Melford Football club and said the family were “devastated”.

Chris Mathews, chairman of Long Melford Community Sports Trust said: ”Geoff was more than a leader; he was the heartbeat of our club and an unwavering advocate for our community.

“His tireless dedication, passion, and vision have left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Geoff’s commitment to the club and the wider community has been an inspiration to us all. He was not just a chairman but a friend, mentor, and guiding light for Long Melford FC.

“His legacy will forever be etched in the history of Long Melford Football Club, and his presence will be greatly missed.”

Club captain, Jacob Brown, said: “Geoff always had a good story to tell and friendly face around the club.

“He will be sadly missed at Long Melford Club. From the captain to the chairman RIP.”

The club will be paying tribute to Mr Thomas at its upcoming senior and junior team fixtures.
