Torquay’s architectural heritage masked by rubbish

Fleet Street in Torquay has undergone some changes over the past five years, and locals are not entirely pleased with the results.

Local history expert Graham Wheatley, an “All-Star Contributor” to the historical Facebook group Undiscovered Torbay, has pointed out that a row of wheelie bins has been growing ever larger along the semi-pedestrianised street.

Graham wrote: “Many of us share an interest in the effect that the passage of time has upon an area in which we know. While change is inevitable, some effects are more palatable than others.

“Fleet Street, Torquay, has undergone a recent change, as evidenced in these three photos.

Within the last five years, a full platoon of commercial wheelie bins has been growing, to parade alongside a sizeable length of an important semi-pedestrianised street in our town centre. This scene is to be witnessed by all who traverse here—including our much-needed holiday visitors.

“This does not appear to be a temporary measure and surely does not present an aesthetically pleasing accompaniment to Torquay’s architectural heritage—such as the Vivian Institute, which now has the dubious honour of overseeing such change!”

With over 70 comments on Graham’s post, many were quick to share their thoughts about the unsightly addition.

The Undiscovered Torbay group echoed Graham’s sentiments, commenting: “While practical considerations like waste management are essential, surely there’s a more thoughtful way to integrate these necessities without compromising the visual appeal of such a historically significant area!”

Viv Crees added: “Opposite my favourite coffee stop, and I count them every time—usually 21. They’re an absolute eyesore.”

Other locals suggested alternatives, sharing images and examples of improved waste management systems used elsewhere.

Julian Fisher referenced the smart underground garbage bins implemented in Amsterdam, while Geoff Norcott shared images of aesthetically pleasing commercial waste bins used in other parts of Europe.
