The latest dogs looking for their forever homes from Newbury Dogs Trust

We’re welcoming back our Dog of the Week after a little Christmas break.

And as we start 2025 Dogs Trust Newbury still has a number of dogs at its Hamstead Marshall base who need a new home.

So every Sunday we will continue to shine a spotlight on one of them to try to help spread the word.

Smokey and Laika are looking for their forever home

Nationwide, the charity currently has 685 dogs that are looking for a family to join.

You can find out more about adopting a dog by visiting the charity’s website.

Today we have an affection brother and sister duo – Smokey and Laika – to introduce you to.

This pair arrived at the trust after their owner’s circumstances changed.

These eight-year-old Siberian Huskies are looking to be rehomed together.

They will need to be exercised at the same time as the pair are very attached to each other and become distressed when they are apart.

The centre said that Smokey is “a friendly boy, although a little more aloof than his sister”.

And Laika is described as “a wonderfully affectionate girl, who loves having a cuddle with people and is very bonded to her brother Smokey”.

They can both be a bit fussy with their meals and treats.

Smokey has currently been put on a diet and the centre said this will need to continue at any new home.

And just like us all, they have found that Laika likes “really tasty treats and nice meat mixed into her dinner”.

They both enjoys exploring when out on walks, but aren’t fans of other dogs and do need some training to improve both of their reaction and emotional response when they meet them.

The centre said any new home will not have any other pets and will need a private garden and they believe due to the size of both Smokey and Laika and their “sometimes lively nature”, they would be better suited to living with older children.

They would benefit from living in a quieter area, as both can struggle with too much going on.

The centre added that Smokey really enjoys a good bum scratch – and said: “You know when you hit the spot, as he stomps his back feet side to side!”

“Smokey and Laika are a very sweet pair of huskies, who will add character and laughter to the right home”.
