‘That one extra drink’ leads to Wyberton woman’s second drink-drive ban

A woman caught drink-driving for a second time has been given a three-year ban from the roads.

Tracy Sanders had ‘had that one extra drink’ when police spotted her defective light as she drove home in the early hours after a night out.

The 59-year-old, from Wyberton, pleaded guilty to drink driving when she appeared in court on Wednesday (January 8).

Boston Magistrates’ Court

Describing the events which unfolded at 1am on December 7 along Boston’s Spalding Road, prosecutor Lottie Tyler told Boston magistrates: “The defendant was stopped driving her Ford Mondeo.

“She had been followed by police from Boston town centre, for about half a mile.

“She had a defective light and she was observed to be driving below the speed limit and hesitantly. Police believed she was drunk.”

Sanders, who receives disability benefits and cares for her mother, gave a reading of 62 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

“She had gone out with friends and had that one extra drink that makes the difference,” said Phillipa Chatterton, in defence.

Sanders had previously been banned from driving for 12 months in July 2022.

Miss Chatterton said this came during a period where her client had turned to drink following the death of her daughter.

The court was also told Sanders ‘returned to her old habit’ of drink following another family bereavement last year.

“She sought help from her GP but couldn’t get an appointment – we all know it’s mission impossible,” Miss Chatterton continued.

“But she has found help with We Are With You and she won’t be drinking again.”

Sanders, of Causeway, Wyberton, was banned from driving for 36 months.

She must also pay a £120 fine, a £48 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
