TfL works mean no down escalator at Blackhorse Road Station until July

The move, which comes into effect from tomorrow (9th January), will leave commuters with mobility issues unable to access the Victoria Line for six months, reports Marco Marcelline

Blackhorse Road Station commuters have hit out at plans by Transport for London (TfL) to stop the down escalator until July while it carries out maintenance works.

The move, which comes into effect from tomorrow (9th January), will leave commuters with mobility issues unable to access the Victoria Line for six months as there is no lift to the platforms.

TfL wrote to customers and local businesses about the plans earlier this month where it stated that old components in both escalators had to be replaced as part of “essential maintenance works”.

Both escalators will be taken out of service one at a time, with the working escalator operating upwards to ensure customers can be safely evacuated from the platforms in the event of an emergency.

TfL told customers affected by the decision: “We apologise for the inconvenience this closure may cause some customers, including those with access or mobility needs, but doing these repairs now will help ensure that the machines operate safely, smoothly and reliably for all customers for years to come.”

Customers who are unable to use the 89 fixed steps down to the platforms have been advised to take the 230 bus to Walthamstow Central or 120/230 to Tottenham Hale, which is step-free.

A wave of criticism was lobbed at TfL by affected locals on social media. One wrote: “What am I meant to do with my baby and pushchair?”

Another local wrote on Facebook: “Good that they have informed us but seriously for six months! It’s ridiculous in my opinion.”

TfL also recently confirmed that the Walthamstow Bus Station lift to Central Station will be replaced in April.

It had been out of service while the bus station was temporarily shut for safety works from Friday 8th November up to and including Friday 20th December.

The closure was in response to the death of Grace Mecaley, 74, who was struck by a 212 bus at the station in December 2023.

Works to the station included updated signage in the carriageway  and in the approach to pedestrian crossings, as well as road resurfacing.
