Susie McCabe on how heart attack inspired new comedy show

After suffering a heart attack last year, the Scottish comedian is set to perform at this year’s Glasgow International Comedy Festival (GICF).

It’s a particularly special year having picked up the Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at last year’s event.

“Every year, there’s more pressure on you to perform and people have higher expectations and spend money to come see you,” McCabe told The National.

“I’m very, very excited about being back because it’s the fourth year in a row now.”

Her latest show – Best Behaviour – comes after her previous sold out shows Femme Fatality and The Merchant of Menace.

She explained: “I had a heart attack in 2024. It was a seismic event and I’m going to discuss that and how it subsequently effects and changes your life whether you want it to or not.”

Reflecting on when she knew such a serious moment could be turned into inspiration for comedy, McCabe (below) immediately returns to being in the ambulance.

“I was lying there and had to cancel a gig and sent a picture to my agent,” she explains.

“I said, ‘next year’s show’s shaping up no bad’ and he must have thought for ‘f*** sake’.

“You just know. You’re going through hospital and all that and you realise how ridiculous all of that is and the nonsense and all the things, but there’s some very funny stories in there.

“And we talk about that, about attitudes, culture, ideas and differences all through this absurdity of life lens.”

It’s set to be a busy festival for McCabe, who will also be part of a live edition of Here Comes The Guillotine – the podcast she appears on alongside Frankie Boyle and Christopher Macarthur-Boyd.

McCabe said: “I really love podcasts, I always have. I’m a big radio person, more than TV. I watch what I want to watch but won’t have it on just for the sake of it.

“I’m one of the last ones that managed to build up an audience not being online and then subsequently getting online.

“I’m very much of the opinion that however you consume your comedy and your art, do it, enjoy it and then hopefully that’ll lead you into a live venue.”
