Sunday bin collections cancelled as snow warning issued

Leeds City Council has cancelled Sunday’s (5 January) bin collections due to ‘extreme weather’ expected on Saturday evening and into Sunday.

Householders due to have their refuse collected on Sunday have been asked to present their bin for collection the following week instead.

An amber warning for snow and freezing rain in the north of England has been issued by the Met Office for Saturday night until Sunday at noon. Meteorologists warn the weather will likely lead to disruption to transport and some other services in Leeds.

A Leeds City Council statement said: “Due to the extreme weather expected overnight on Saturday into Sunday 5 January, refuse collections in Leeds which were due to take place on Sunday have been postponed.

“They will now take place instead on the following Sunday, 12 January and will ensure all bins that will be extra full at this time of the year are collected, albeit a week later than usual.

“The council apologises for any inconvenience around these unexpected changes caused by the weather, but the safety of staff and the public by taking 60 large vehicles off the road in expected challenging road conditions is of paramount importance.

“Those due for collection on Sunday are asked to present their bin the following week instead, and the council thanks residents for their ongoing support and assistance.”

Community led Bramley Baths has also said it will be opening later on Sunday due to the weather.

A statement on social media said: “Due to the amber weather warning issued for Saturday night, we have taken the decision to delay the opening of the Baths until 11am on Sunday 5 January. All being well, normal timetable will resume from then.

“We will be monitoring the situation closely on the day, and anticipate these plans may change, so please keep an eye on social media for any updates before you travel.”

Northern Powergrid has also issued a warning that power supplies in Yorkshire could be disrupted.

A statement said: “Our teams are ready to respond 24/7, as quickly as possible to keep the power on. We have extra teams ready to go with our 4x4s and specialist access vehicles so we can get peoples’ lights back on and carry out repairs if our network is damaged as a result of the wintery conditions.

“We will keep customers updated via our website, social media channels and text messages, and customers can track our progress on our power cut map.”
