Storm Eowyn brings widespread travel disruption to Bradford

Flights and train services have been cancelled as strong winds from Storm Eowyn batter not only Bradford but the rest of the UK, Scotland and Ireland.

Northern train services have been badly disrupted, with all trains in and out of Braford Forster Square being cancelled this morning.

In a post this morning on X, formerly Twitter, Northern said “Services between Bradford Forster Square – Ilkley; Bradford Forster Square – Skipton; Leeds – Bradford Forster Square; Leeds – Ilkley; Leeds – Skipton are being disrupted due to severe weather.”

Another X post from Northern advised people not to travel, saying: “Due to the severe weather many routes are closed today with no alternatives in place and we are advising ‘Do Not Travel’. This is not a decision taken lightly, safety for our customers and staff is always our priority.

“On routes where trains are running, we expect disruption and have reduced the number of trains running so we advise against travelling if possible.

“If you have a ticket dated for today, you can use it over the weekend and up to Tuesday 28 January. If you are travelling today, you may travel at any time. If you decide not to travel, a full, fee free, refund is available.”

Grand Central Rail also posted about disruption to train services in the Bradford area.

One Grand Centre Rail X post said: “Storm Eowyn update: “Due to forecasted high winds, we are having to divert our 10:23 and 14:49 Bradford Interchange to London Kings Cross services along with our 10:57, 14:56 and 16:27 London Kings Cross to Bradford Interchange services.”

Another Grand Central Rail X post said: “We are unable to call at Low Moor, Halifax, Brighouse and Mirfield.

“We have ticket acceptance with LUMO, Hull Trains, LNER, CrossCountry, Northern and Transpennine Express via any reasonable route.

“Passengers can also use their tickets to travel on Monday, January 27, or Tuesday, January 28.”

In a post this morning on X, Tracy Brabin, Mayor of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which looks after buses, said: “Weather warnings for strong winds are in place across West Yorkshire today.

“As a result, there are some disruptions on the transport networks, so take extra care and please check the latest updates before you travel.”

Flights into and out of Leeds Bradford Airport have also been disrupted this morning.

A spokesperson for Leeds Bradford Airport said: “Due to strong winds caused by Storm Éowyn, flight schedules at Leeds Bradford Airport are experiencing some disruption and will be subject to change at short notice due to the weather.

“Flights to and from Belfast International, Belfast City and Dublin have been cancelled.

“Jet2 has already contacted customers on the following departures which are delayed until this afternoon: • 07:45 Antalya LS213 • 09:45 Arrecife LS415 • 10:40 Tenerife South LS243 “Customers are advised to check with their airline for the most up-to-date information regarding their flight before travelling to the airport.”

Aviation analytics company Cirium said 1,070 flights scheduled to operate to/from airports in the UK or Ireland on Friday have been cancelled.

That is equivalent to 20% of all flights.

The worst affected airports in terms of the number of cancellations are: – Dublin (119 departures, 109 arrivals) – Edinburgh (81 departures, 77 arrivals) – Heathrow (50 departures, 58 arrivals) – Glasgow (43 departures, 42 arrivals)
