A Suffolk pottery firm has created a new, unique teapot to commemorate 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen.

Carters of Suffolk, based at Stonham Barns, near Stowmarket, created the piece, which will be available throughout the year.

The teapot is adorned with the author’s completed novels and was created as part of the celebrations to mark 250 years since her birth on December 16, 1775.

It acts as a special addition to existing Jane Austen book teapots.

John Baldry, of Carters of Suffolk, said the team was hugely proud to be launching this piece of memorabilia in tribute to one of the finest names in English Literature.

“Jane Austen’s aim was not to write brilliant novels but to write novels that provided positive moral instruction, and she succeeded to the point that her novels have been translated into 35 languages and inspired countless adaptations, biographies and documentaries,” Mr Baldry said.

“She is the epitome of English culture, and we are delighted to be celebrating her success with the launch of our second-generation Jane Austen teapots.”

Jane Austen died in 1817 and was buried in Winchester Cathedral.

Her works were famous for their social commentary.

Other celebrations of her 250th birthday include a four-part BBC drama Miss Austen.

This follows the mystery of Cassandra Austen burning her famous sister Jane’s letters, promising a ‘heart-breaking’ story of sisterly love.

Carters of Suffolk already has a teapot tribute to Jane Austen.

Mr Baldry added: “Our original teapot is loved by so many people and is the setting for many an ‘Afternoon Tea’ not only in the UK but internationally.

“It is with a great sense of satisfaction that we can offer these new beautifully handmade teapots to followers of English literature and period drama.”
