St Martin’s School, Caerphilly

St Martin’s School in Caerphilly was under lockdown for almost two hours on Tuesday January 14.

Pupils at the school were told to stay in their classrooms and sit underneath their desks during the lockdown.

Following the incident, headteacher Mr Jarvis said: “Thank you to all staff and students for undertaking such an impressive lockdown procedure today which ran very smoothly.

“To update everyone, we had an allegation this afternoon of a weapon on site. We took advice from the police who told us to move straight into our lockdown procedure.

“Following police investigations, the school was taken out of lockdown and normal schooling could return once again.”

He added: “Thankfully there was no weapon, there was no intruder and police continue their investigations at this time.”

In a statement, Gwent Police said: “We had a call at about 10.30am reporting concern for safety on the school premises.

“The school was put into lockdown as a precaution.

“Officers attended. There are no safety concerns and the lockdown has been lifted.”

The force added that enquiries are ongoing to establish if this was a malicious report.

A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We understand the school instigated lockdown proceedings this morning and the police were in attendance.

“Appropriate procedures were followed by the school and pupils and staff are all safe.”

Newport High School was forced into lockdown on Tuesday January 7 after a former key stage three student allegedly caused damage to school property and cars, as well as attacking three staff members.
