The Year 6 pupils from St Mark’s Junior School in Salisbury were inspired to help after reading the book A Long Walk to Water.
They have joined the Iron Giraffe Challenge, an initiative by Water for South Sudan (WFSS), to help bring clean water to communities in need.
The children have been hosting bake sales, movie nights and quizzes to raise money.

St Mark’s Junior School have joined the Iron Giraffe Challenge (Image: St Mark’s Junior School) The Iron Giraffe Challenge, named after WFSS’s water-drilling rig, is a call to action for schools and organisations worldwide to raise funds for drilling wells and providing hygiene education in South Sudan, where access to clean water is a daily struggle.
Water scarcity in South Sudan often forces children, especially girls, to spend hours walking to fetch water, keeping them out of school and limiting their futures.
By participating in the Iron Giraffe Challenge, the Year 6 children of St Mark’s aim to help change that.
Year 6 teacher Linda Corfield said: “This challenge is all about children helping children.
“Our students are not just fundraising. They are learning about the importance of global citizenship and how small actions can have a huge impact on someone’s life.”
