Slough man threatened to kill wife with carving knife

Rajinder Puni, 50, was in an argument with his wife on July 13 this year over how much he had been drinking, before he put the knife to Rupinder Puni’s neck.

Prosecutor Chris Waymont said: “The defendant put a knife to her neck during the course of the argument.

“She tried to put her hand up to defend herself and in the course of that injured her hand.”

The knife, described by Mrs Puni, was a big black meat and kitchen knife – around 15cms long.

Police were called when Mrs Puni, who was in court last week, fled to a neighbour’s home.

The court heard Mrs Puni suffered a 5cms long wound to her left hand, which caused nerve damage. The victim said she had suffered a loss of sensation in her hand.

She was treated at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough and given local anaesthetic.

Mr Waymont said: “There was indeed an injury to the nerve but it was ultimately treated throughout the use of antiseptics, stitches and dressings.”

Mrs Puni also suffered an injury to her chin which the victim said was caused by the defendant grabbing her. The victim told police during the attack the defendant – of Harris Gardens, Slough, Berks. – had shouted at her “I will kill you and happily go to prison.”

Sapna Devi, defending, said: “Mr Puni had expressed remorse in the couple of times I have spoken to him and in the pre-sentence report.

“He’s deeply regretful of his actions on July 13 and embarrassed and it has all stemmed from his addiction to alcohol.

“Your Honour will note the pre-sentence report does explore that to some degree.”

She later added: “He’s a friendly man who has been open about his love for his family but also about how his alcohol addiction has effected his family. He is committed to dealing with his problem.”

A letter from the defendant’s wife that was handed to the judge supported the fact that she is also willing to try to have a relationship with Mr Puni once more,” the defence counsel said.

Ms Devi told the judge the defendant – who appeared via CVP video link from HMP Bullingdon – had been abstinent from alcohol for the past four to five months.

Judge Amjad Nawaz told the defendant he had an ‘alcohol-related problem’ and described the knife as a ‘highly dangerous weapon.’

He said: “It’s for you to change your drinking behaviour. It’s a matter entirely for you.”

For one count of unlawful wounding, Puni was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment – suspended for two years.
