Siobhian Brown says contractor appointed for NATS project

The Ayr politician has revealed that a contractor has been appointed for the £6 million project, with completion scheduled for September this year.

NATS is the largest air traffic control provider in the UK, providing air traffic control (ATC) at 15 airports and managing all UK upper airspace from their two ATC centres, one in Prestwick and the other at Swanwick in Hampshire.

A proposal was lodged back in July with South Ayrshire Council for a new staff support building at its existing ATC centre on Fresson Avenue.

NATS have been located at Prestwick Airport since the 1970s, when they moved into Atlantic House.

The Prestwick Centre was then constructed in 2009 and NATS now delivers key ATC services from this building.

Planning documents stated that Atlantic House is now underused and is set to be demolished. NATS plans to create a new building in its place for staff.

The first floor will have a medical centre and staff gym, with 12 bedrooms on the second floor.

Council planners approved the application in October, saying that the new building would not impact the surrounding area.

Ms Brown said: “This development will provide NATS staff with modern, purpose-built facilities, including a medical centre, state-of-the-art gym with 24/7 access, and changing rooms – promoting a healthier lifestyle for those who work tirelessly to keep our skies safe.

“This investment strengthens Prestwick’s vital role in air traffic control but also brings significant benefits to our local community, creating construction jobs during the building phase and long-term employment opportunities once completed.

“I’m proud to see NATS investing in the future of Prestwick and look forward to seeing these plans come to life.”
