Siobhian Brown calls for firework zones in South Ayrshire

The Scottish Government gave local authorities new powers to designate FCZs in 2022 following a riot in Dundee involving fireworks.

The rules are enforced by Police Scotland, and areas of Glasgow and Edinburgh have already had FCZs implemented.

North Ayrshire Council now offers an online form for communities to request a control zone, however, no such option exists in the south of the region.

South Ayrshire Council says that it is continuing to liaise with the relevant bodies around the potential zones.

She said: “I have had many constituents get in touch with me regarding implementing firework control zones in South Ayrshire.

“In September 2024, I was told that officials would not be implementing a firework control zone process.

“This absence of a process gives a false impression that there is little or no demand for the zones themselves.

“I wrote to officials on two further occasions in October and November – the latter being sparked by local disorder around Bonfire Night.

“I received an acknowledgement yet no answer to my question.

“North Ayrshire Council has implemented such a system, allowing communities and groups to submit requests for zones online.

“Over 20 site requests have been collected. North Ayrshire Council then engages with stakeholders, including the fire and rescue service, before presenting the matter to cabinet for a decision.

“The benefits of these zones can be significant, especially for vulnerable residents and animals.

“The creation of zones would enable local authorities to manage fireworks easily, ensuring that safety is paramount.

“I would therefore urge South Ayrshire Council to introduce a fair, open, online process, to enable local communities to make requests for firework control zones.”

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “South Ayrshire Council officers continue to liaise with the community planning partnership including Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service regarding firework control zones.

“It was previously decided that we would not be pursuing firework control zones at this time.”
