Severn Way: Worcester footpath in desperate need of upgrade

The Severn Way, a 210-mile footpath that runs along the banks of the UK’s longest river links up with the bridge on its western side, but disrepair and poor weather has made it difficult to use whether it is on two feet or two wheels.

One person who it has caught the attention of is Tor Pingree, a city councillor for St Clement, the ward along the western bank of the River Severn.

Cllr Pingree said: “Despite reporting the issue to the county council and emailing Simon Geraghty several times, I have received no response about whether this path will be improved and when this is likely to happen.

“This is not just a concern for me, many residents have also highlighted the poor quality of this path and, if Kepax Bridge is going to be a success, it is hugely important that this path is improved.”

Worcestershire County Council manages the Severn Way for 39 miles as it weaves through the county from Shropshire in the north to Gloucestershire in the south.

In its current state, The Severn Way is very difficult to walk or cycle along the west bank of the river, forcing people to use the much busier Hallow Road.

Cllr Pingree said: “Hallow Road has no cycle paths and is quite dangerous to travel by bike.

“I am well aware of this as I have experienced a number of close passes when cycling up and down the hill and, where possible, I try to avoid cycling on Hallow Road because I find it too dangerous.”

Despite suggestions from residents and councillors alike, the Severn Way will remain in its current state for the foreseeable future.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “There are currently no plans to upgrade the riverside path at this stage.”

However, Cllr Pingree intends to keep pushing for the Severn Way to be improved: “I would like to see more joined up thinking in this area.

“The county council has just opened a walking and cycling bridge leading onto this route but they still need to show more interest in the safety and comfort of pedestrians and cyclists.”
