The future of the now defunct Rothes Bowling Club green will be discussed at a meeting this Sunday.
Once a thriving group, like many others the Speyside club was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and never recovered, forcing it to close last year.
Rothes Bowling Club never recovered from the Covid-19 shutdown and closed for good last year.
The lease was returned to Moray Council, but a proposal has been put forward to resurrect the site for active use in the community.
Local Facebook group ‘Rothes and Roon Aboot’ published a pole last year, asking for suggestions on what could replace the club.
Over 300 people voted on the poll, with the highest number of votes calling for the installation of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) with an astroturf surface.
Hamish McBain, who is secretary of the Rothes Tennis Club situated next to the former bowling green, is urging people to attend a meeting on Sunday to determine the site’s future.
He said following the results of the Facebook poll, a preliminary meeting was held in October with the intention of furthering the MUGA option, but only 12 people turned up.
“A decision was made that those present form a steering group to make initial investigations into what was entailed with regard to the surfacing and what sports the area might be used for,” he said.
He added that Moray Council were approached for advice, and discussions with the authority determined that the project would be costly even before it got off the ground to absorb legal fees, planning permission and sorting out the lease.
Hamish said: “We hope for a big attendance allowing us to form a sizeable committee, and to demonstrate the willingness of the community to forge ahead with what will be a long term project.”
