Rotary Cambridge raises £1,400 for Ugandan women in childbirth at Melbourn boutique

Rotary Club Cambridge has raised £1,400 in a fundraising fashion show at Esse boutique in Melbourn.

The proceeds from the event will benefit in aid of club president Henry Lugobe’s chosen good cause to buy whole body pressure suits for Uganda.

Rotary Club Cambridge held a fundraising fashion show at Esse boutique in Melbourn: club president Henry Lugobe, left, with club secretary Rosemary Turner, demonstrate the body suits for Ugandan women in childbirth difficulties

The whole body pressure suits are used for the many women in Uganda who give birth far away from hospitals. If they hemorrhage it is often more than an hour’s journey to reach hospital: with the pressure suits they stand a good chance of getting to the nearest hospital.

With help from club secretary Rosemary Turner, Henry explained how the suit works.

“These functional and reusable garments control bleeding after birth and enable the new young mothers to stabilise, so they have time to get to a hospital for further life saving care,” he said.

The evening was skilfully compèred by Rotary’s Neil Whiteside while the models – all staff members at Esse – sashayed down the stairs and around the floor in the latest fashions. The evening concluded with a raffle.

This third Rotary fashion show organised by the Cambridge branch is an annual event to raise funds for good causes.
