Rosyth pupil writes to Graeme Downie about busy road

Maisie Fox, aged 6, a primary two pupil at St John’s Primary, wrote to Graeme Downie MP for Dunfermline and Dollar about getting to school via Admiralty Road.

As previously reported in the Press, Rosyth families with children attending Inverkeithing High School were told they would have to cross a busy slip road onto the M90 as a ‘safe route’ to get to and from the high school.

Maisie pointed out that from her home to her school, there isn’t a safe place for her to cross Admiralty Road as there is no pedestrian crossing.

Additionally, she highlighted the poor condition of the pavement, revealing that the bumpy, uneven, and potholed pavement had once caused her to fall.

Maisie said: “I really want to walk or scooter to school because I think it will keep me fit and healthy, but the road is very busy, and I feel scared because the cars go so fast.

“I wrote to the MP to ask him to help fix the pavement and make it so I can cross the road safely.”

In response to Maisie’s letter, Graeme Downie joined the youngster and her mum, Gillian, on Friday’s school run.

He said after his walk: “It was fantastic to have such a young constituent write to me to share her views on how to improve life in and around the Rosyth area of the constituency.

“Maisie is right to highlight the importance of safe active travel routes for pedestrians, especially for school pupils.

“I was shocked on our walk from Maisie’s home to school to see the state of the pavement and the lack of pedestrian crossing on this section of Admiralty Road.

“It feels like a significant oversight, especially with the construction of the new high school which will increase footfall seeking to cross Admiralty Road.

“I have assured Maisie that we will contact Fife Council immediately to set out her concerns and to ask for a plan to prioritise safety on this stretch of road.”

Mr Downie is also seeking to raise the issue in the House of Commons next week to see if any further action can be taken at a UK Government level.

In 2023, 15,500 cars drove along the Admiralty Road section of the A985 in Rosyth daily.
