Romsey Town Council objects to adverts on Mountbatten House hoardings

Churchill Living has applied to Test Valley Borough Council for permission to erect new hoardings around Edwina Mountbatten House in Broadwater Road, Romsey.

According to the application, the proposed hoardings would feature adverts for the developers.

The application was discussed at a Romsey Town Council planning committee on Thursday, January 10, with civic chiefs choosing to object to the application.

Cllr John Parker said: “I find it difficult to assess this application. There are no photos to show what goes where.

“But then again, I only have 40 years of planning experience.”

Cllr Parker also noted that the adverts do not show what Churchill, who own Edwina Mountbatten House and plan to turn it into retirement flats, hope to build on the site.

Cllr Mark Cooper said: “When I saw this application, I wrote down some notes. One is that this is a matter of blatant self-justification.

“That is no reason for refusal but I think my reaction is similar to the reaction that will happen if these adverts go up. And those who have to live opposite it for months, I think it is a most unfortunate imposition on their lives.

“I object to the application as it stands.”

Cllr John Critchley said: “If this were any thing else, would we want that sort of hard standing for 18 months?

“I was wondering if this hardstanding is dangerous on that junction.”

The committee voted to object to the application.

This comes just one month after the developers overcame their final hurdle in the battle for permission to build nearly 50 retirement flats on the site.

On December 10, it was announced an appeal by Churchill Retirement Living against Test Valley Borough Council’s decision to block the scheme was allowed.

There are no longer any obstacles to the company’s plans to demolish Edwina Mountbatten House on Broadwater Road.
