Romsey man completes year-long challenge running with others

Simon Williamson, from Romsey, ran every day throughout 2024, covering a total distance of 2,920km, equivalent to running from Southampton to Istanbul.

He completed this mammoth task on New Year’s Eve, crossing the finish line with his wife in front of cheering family and friends.

He said: “It was wonderful to cross the finish line with my wife who has been very supportive of the challenge which has seen me travel around the country to run with some inspiring and interesting people.”

Simon said: “It’s a fantastic feeling to have finished the challenge after many highs and a few lows during the year.

“I’ve been astonished by how much goodwill there is around running.”

He dedicated the challenge to his mother, aiming to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease.

Simon continued: “My mother was always such a hard-working and active person and Parkinson’s continues to take a lot from her.

“I did this for her – to raise awareness of a debilitating condition and give something back to a charity doing vital work.”

Throughout the year, Simon ran a combination of 5km, 10km, half and full marathon distances, alongside a different person each day.

Simon covered a total distance of 2,920km (Image: Supplied) He clocked up 301 hours and 45 minutes of running, with a total elevation gain of 30,036m, more than three times the height of Mount Everest.

Simon, who works as a director for DCBL, started running in 2013 and set a personal target of completing 100 marathons in 10 years and raising £15,000.

He achieved this in eight years and has now completed 120 official marathons.

In 2024, he started a new campaign to run with a new person each day, aiming to raise a further £15,000 over the calendar year.

He exceeded this target, bringing his total fundraising amount to £32,000.

Some of his running partners included ex-Hampshire cricketer Jimmy Adams, Guinness World Record holder Adam Holland, and Steve Edwards, the world record holder for running 1,000 official marathons in the fastest average finish time.

Caroline Rassell, chief executive of Parkinson’s UK, also took part in the 366-day challenge.

Simon plans to celebrate his achievement with an end of challenge celebration and fundraiser at The Grand, Southampton, on January 17, 2025, where he will welcome back his 300 plus running partners.
