Rochford Council Mill Hall ‘big event’ scam warning

Rochford Council issued the warning yesterday after posts on social media appeared to promote the event and ask for deposits from potential traders.

However, the council has stated no such event has been booked at the venue and urged all residents and traders to avoid paying money to those advertising the event.

Rochford Council’s non-alligned deputy leader, Michael Hoy, said: “We are aware of social media posts circulating about a scam targeting residents and traders, falsely claiming there is a “big event” at Mill Hall on the 25th of the month and requesting deposits.

“We can confirm this is indeed a scam. The council takes such issues very seriously, and we urge all residents to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal details or money with any source not verified.

“To ensure the authenticity of any events at any council venues, we strongly encourage residents and traders to check the official Rochford District Venues website or social media channels or to contact us directly.”

Earlier in the week, residents began spotting social media posts appealing for stall holders for an event on Saturday January 25 and Sunday January 26 at Rayleigh’s Mill Hall – which is owned by Rochford Council.

Several prospective traders report contacting the linked email address and being asked to pay deposits ranging from £30 to £55 – it is unclear how many individuals have made payments.

Karen Smith, 58, who runs Pawfect Pup Treats, contacted the fraudulent social media poster with the intention of selling her homemade dog treats at the Mill Hall event.

The Rayleigh resident said she decided to reach out to the poster after having success at similar-sounding events last year.

She said: “I saw this ‘big event’ being advertised at Mill Hall and emailed the attached address. I filled out an online form but was then directed to a PayPal account – that felt dodgy.

“I decided to check with Mill Hall and they confirmed there was no such event taking place. I’m very lucky I didn’t send over any money, but I’m hoping people don’t turn up.”
