RGS: Springfield to merge with RGS Grange amid school fees VAT

RGS Springfield pupils in years P2, reception and years one to five will move to RGS The Grange in Claines from September 2025 as part of “efficiency savings to safeguard the financial stability of the schools”.

The site in Britannia Square will become a dedicated nursery.

In a letter to parents, Andrew Greenway, chair of governors at RGS, said: “These changes come in response to the challenges posed by the imposition of VAT on school fees as announced in the recent Budget, the feedback from the Parent Survey and extensive market research analysis.

“…RGS Springfield is changing structure to reflect increasing costs of running a prep school, low numbers of pupils in specific year groups and a changing pupil demographic both locally and nationally.”

RGS Springfield currently offers education for children aged between 2 and 11.

From September 2025, Springfield will be used exclusively as a nursery.

In the October budget, the Labour government announced a 20 per cent VAT on private school fees, with over 6,600 pupils affected across the county.

Worcester News contacted Tom Collins, Labour MP for Worcester, for a comment but he did not respond to requests.

RGS Worcester executive head John Pitt

John Pitt, executive head at RGS, said: “The four RGS schools are very well placed for the future despite the challenges that all independent schools now face, not least from the Government’s VAT tax.”

Mr Pitt said: “All institutions must respond to change and we are in a challenging period of change in independent educational nationally.

“The board of governors and school leadership team has recognised the growing market for excellent nursery education while the prep school market is being more challenging.

“At RGS, we are able to realign our resources in order to provide an exceptional education for all pupils, while ensuring that our schools are financially secure and future-proof.”

Mr Pitt added: “Making this change for RGS Springfield is an acknowledgement of the changing market and a chance to develop further our Worcester city centre nursery provision.

“The Nursery at RGS Springfield is such a nurturing and inspiring place and we are delighted about the opportunity to expand our provision for even more families.”
