Renfrewshire council quits Twitter/X and switches to rival platform

The local authority, which is home to more than 180,000 Scots, is thought to be the first in Scotland to ditch the platform, which has come into increasing controversy since its takeover by the businessman Elon Musk.

Many users have complained about inappropriate material appearing in their feeds, including images of violence and pornography, hate speech and right-wing demagoguery.

Among the previously-banned individuals to have been let back on the platform include self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate, British far-right figure Tommy Robinson and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Twitter has seen something of an exodus in recent years (Image: SOPA Images) This has led to an exodus from the micro-blogging website, including the high-profile departures of The Guardian newspaper, Derbyshire and North Wales Police, comedians, celebrities and an account run by the operators of the Clifton suspension bridge.

The author Stephen King has also quit the platform, with the American writer branding it ‘toxic’.

While the local authority itself will no longer broadcast news on twitter/X, it remains to be seen if its institutions, such as schools, will also leave the platform.

A spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council said that officers were currently “in consultation” with schools over the issue.

The spokesperson added: “We regularly monitor and review the performance of all the channels we use to communicate with the public, our partners and the media and as such, we have decided to stop using X and move to Bluesky.

“X has changed significantly as a social media platform over recent years and the channels that people and organisations follow continues to diversify and change and we want to ensure that we make best use of the channels available with the resource we have.”

“People can follow us on our Bluesky account and we will continue to provide information through a wide range of other channels which also includes the local media, social media, emails, local community groups and networks, our website and print and outdoor materials.”
