Rare book among bargains at Shelter Scotland’s annual New Year sale

Often sold online for upwards of £1,500, the charity shop had it marked down with a price of just £150.

The book, written under the pseudonym of Ellis Bell, was originally published in 1847 but this edition is from 11 years later in 1858. Signed David Attenborough books are also available.

The sales often attract huge crowds and there was plenty more for them to try and get their hands on.

There’s also vintage amber Bakelite beaded jewellery up for grabs and a pristine Bob Mackie Barbie.

Bargain hunters were spotted queuing outside the store ahead of its opening on Friday and it will run for the next seven days.

Last year, the shop had bargains including a signed first edition of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets going for £400, and a first edition of HG Wells’ War of the World priced at £600.

Director, Alison Watson, said: “For more than two decades now the Shelter Scotland’s January Stockbridge launch event has been marked in the calendars of Edinburgh’s discerning shoppers.

“Scotland’s housing emergency now means there are more than 10,110 children in Scotland with nowhere to call home and more and more people are becoming homeless.

“Your support keeps us in the fight against homelessness, so ahead of this exciting event I’d like to thank all our customers and donors for their generosity.”

Stockbridge Shop Manager, Peter Jew, added: “I can’t wait to welcome all our customers to our annual January sale event in Edinburgh.

“This is a chance to showcase and celebrate our donations and we’re immensely grateful to everyone who contributed.

“We have a truly magnificent selection on offer, this is a great opportunity to grab something special while supporting Shelter Scotland in the fight against the housing emergency.”
