Plans to enhance Stockton Heath war memorial given green light

The plans were submitted to Warrington Borough Council to install two Royal British Legion silhouette figures ahead of Remembrance Day.

The plans outlined that the figures were be fixed on the pillars of the brick walls of Stockton Heath War Memorial, on the corner of Ellesmere Road and London Road.

Applicant Stockton Heath Parish Council said: “The parish council is the custodian of the war memorial, which was erected in 1921 through public subscription.

“As other custodians have done locally, such as the Cenotaph on Bridge Foot and Walton War Memorial, the parish council wished to enhance the visual appeal of the war memorial.

“It is visible on crossing the swing bridge from the north into Stockton Heath, sitting on the crossroads where London Road, Fairfield Road and Ellesmere Road meet.

“The memorial is the central focus of the annual Remembrance Day Service, and it is also the point where local tributes can be laid, such as for the Manchester Arena Bombing and the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“The figurines are made of aluminium composite and are 1.47m in height. One depicts a male soldier holding a rifle bayonet, and the other a female wearing a cap and giving a salute.

“They would visually enhance and draw attention to the war memorial.

“The figurines are intended to be permanently displayed until the lifespan of the materials is complete, but they could be mounted during Remembrance events and removed shortly after if this is more desirable.”

Warrington Borough Council has now approved the planning application, which is subject to conditions.

Included in the condition is that the development must commence within the next three years and carried out in accordance with the submitted documents.
