The old Robert Wilson premises – which at one stage employed 300 people – operated within the grounds of Eglinton Country Park but closed in 1997.
Converted stables which once served Eglinton Castle, the building – which is sited next to the home of the Ayr Model Railway Group – has lain abandoned and derelict since its closure.
However, the premises could soon be brought back into use after plans were published by North Ayrshire Council this week.
Applicant David Munro is seeking permission for the refurbishment and alterations of the building.
In doing so, it is proposed that the former factory will be converted into five individual units which could be rented out for business, industrial or storage use.
The planned work would see the access roadway into the area cleared alongside intrusive vegetation and shrubbery within the peripheral areas.
The main building canopy would also be demolished with the associated ground made good thereafter.
Refurbishment work would then be carried out on the main building to create the lettable units.
Part of the outbuildings on site would also be demolished, though some would be retained and refurbished for future use.
The final stage of work would see the applicant make good the vehicular and pedestrian access route to the buildings and identify parking areas.
In documents supporting the application, further potential phases of work on the site are also detailed. However, at this stage, no plans have been formerly lodged in respect of this work.
A second phase, if plans are submitted and approved, would see more shrubbery removed and the construction of a new building for three further workshop/office units created.
A final, third, phase would see similar work carried out to create a new build facility with the scale and use class of this to be determined at a future date.
