Pictures: The Wolf Moon captured in the North East

The Wolf Moon was seen and captured by photographers in all its glory from Darlington and South Shields last night.

It was visible on Monday night (January 13) and reached peak illumination just before 10.30pm.

The Wolf Moon is the name given to the first full moon in January, and the first of the year.

The Wolf Moon gets its name from Native American tribes, who often heard wolves howling during the cold winter nights, when the animals are more active.

This name eventually made its way across the Atlantic to Europe, where it was adopted by medieval settlers.

Winter is known to be the best season for stargazing in the UK, due to the longer dark nights and clearer skies with less haze on colder nights.

If you missed this moon, then not to worry. There are a dozen named moons that will appear this year including the pink moon on April 12 and the Beaver Moon on November 5.

The next named moon will be the snow moon on February 12.
