With all the gloom around and short daylight hours, sometimes the world can look splendid in the winter’s light, writes Ian Thomas.
Today we got lucky as Gloucestershire was on the northernmost edge of low pressure affecting the south-west and gave us a mix of clear skies and cloud. The cold air accentuated the conditions and made for interesting light conditions and I had to be quick as it only lasted 30minutes.

The views are from Whiteway and Whiteway estate in Dursley looking across the Uley Valley to Cam Peak, Cam Long Down, Smallpox Hill and Uley Bury.
The weather has been more like winter should be this week, with frost and some light snowfall. The northern half of England, the south east and parts of the south west have all seen significant snowfall , especially the Pennines, where punters at the infamous Tan Hill Inn were snowed in for four days this week before the road outside was ploughed – what a wonderful experience.
Temperatures have fallen to -4.7c at Dursley and if you think that is cold, then try Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands where the coldest night of the winter so far saw -14.6c (6f) over the snowfields. The last time we had a minimum that low in Gloucestershire was January 1982.
