Pianist Olga Stezhko to perform at Darlington Central Hall

The Darlington Piano Society’s 2024-25 season continues with a recital by Ms Stezhko at the venue’s Central Hall at 3pm on Sunday, January 19.

Ms Stezhko has previously played for the town’s Music Society in 2015, 2018, and 2021, but this will be her first engagement with the piano society.

Society chairman Greg Johnson said: “Although we are in our 29th season of piano recitals, eight of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas have not featured in our recitals, and we are very grateful to Olga for meeting the challenge given her to introduce two of them to our audiences.”

Born in Minsk, Ms Stezhko was educated in Belarus, Italy, and the UK, where she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees with distinction at the Royal Academy of Music.

She has performed worldwide, including at the Barbican Hall in London, the Salle Cortot in Paris, and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

At the request of the society, Ms Stezhko will perform two Beethoven sonatas that have not previously been played for the society – the short Opus 49 sonatas – and will complete the first half of her programme with the better-known Op 31, No 3.

The second half of her performance will feature works by J S Bach, Poulenc, Debussy, Scriabin, and short pieces by the rarely heard Lev Abeliovich.
