Person struck by train in North East pronounced dead at scene

Emergency Services were called to the Cragmill Level Crossing in Belford after reports of a person being struck by a train on a key railway line connecting Newcastle and Edinburgh. 

In a statement, a spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “BTP officers attended the line close to Cragmill Level Crossing in Belford on Saturday 4th January 2024 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP attended the incident and it is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“A person was located but was pronounced dead at the scene. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

National Rail confirmed that while lines have now reopened, delays of up to 60 minutes were expected throughout the morning.

Replacement bus services have been provided, and tickets are being accepted on alternative routes.

LNER expressed their condolences in a statement they said: “LNER works closely with The Samaritans and The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
