Odeon Worcester: cinema celebrates 75th anniversary

Odeon Cinema, on Foregate Street, Worcester, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in January.

Despite opening in 1949, the site of the cinema had been owned by Odeon since the 1930s, making it just one of six Odeon Cinemas in the UK commissioned by founder Oscar Deutsch still standing.

When the cinema first opened, it consisted of just a single, grand screen.

The very first film to be shown at the Odeon was The Rocking Horse Winner, a fantasy film about a boy who can predict the winner of a horse race before it begins.

On the silver anniversary year of the cinema’s opening, and with the pictures becoming more and more popular as a family day out, it underwent the first of three expansions and introduced two new screens.

In 1990, the cinema was expanded again to five screens and the most recent expansion, seven years later, added two more screens bringing the total to seven and cost £500,000.

The cinema has seen its fair share of stars visit throughout the years.

In 1998, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker visited the Odeon after the release of Rush Hour.

John Bradley, best known for his role as Samwell Tarly in HBO’s Game of Thrones also visited the theatre once to watch a movie and John Challis, who played Boycie in Only Fools and Horses attended several notable premieres.

Now, the cinema will spend the month of January celebrating the milestone.

A spokesperson for Odeon Worcester said: “We will be stretching celebrations out across the month of January.

“This will include some classic movies each week, priced at £5.

“Some of the films being shown are the ones that premiered at Worcester quite some time ago.”
