Odeon cinema in Warrington sparks wave of nostalgia

Many residents took to social media to share their stories about the Odeon, which was a part of the community for decades.

The town centre venue closed in 1994 before being demolished later that year.

Wayne Peers reminisced about his first movie experience, saying: “Watched my 1st movie at the cinema here but chickened out twice on Ghostbusters and Care Bears the movie because I was scared of the dark, but then I plucked up the courage to watch Police Academy 4.”

Derek Carey Vernon also shared his experiences, highlighting the cinema’s role in his life.

He said: “So many special memories.

“I watched Zombies Dawn of the Dead three times in 1980… I also ran past this iconic venue when I won the Warrington Half Marathon in 1988.

“How I wish I could turn the clock back.”

His memories show how the cinema has been a backdrop for significant life events for many.

For Larraine Parker, a special event stands out.

She recalled: “Seeing the premier of A Bridge Too Far.

“It was superb.

“All the veterans who were involved during the war had a champagne reception.”

Barry Foster shared a cheeky memory from his childhood, saying: “Waiting for your mate to get in on Saturday morning kids club and opening the fire exit to let everyone in free.”

Anthony Cartledge recalled a school trip to the Odeon in 1973 to watch Kes, while Trev Hutson remembered the kindness of the manager who let him and his friend watch The Great Rock “N” Roll Swindle at just 15 years old.

These memories highlight the cinema’s welcoming atmosphere.

Christine Bradley reflected on the fun of the Saturday kids club, stating: “Saturday kids club in the morning cowboy film, Flash Gordon, all us kids throwing stuff at screen when Ming came on – best times.”

Pam Milne shared a personal connection to the Odeon, explaining: “Saw Conan the Barbarian there and asked cinema manager if I could have the cinema poster.

“Still have the poster after all these years.”

This demonstrates the lasting impact the cinema has had on its patrons.

Sheila Williams reminisced about her first date in 1959 at the Odeon, adding: “Good memories.

“Married in 1962 and still going strong.”

Jo Williams noted her family connection, sharing: “My Grandfather temporarily moved to Warrington from Wales as Chief Projectionist of the new Odeon.

“He ended up staying with his young family as WW2 broke out.”

Collette Griffiths fondly recalled enjoying treats from the kiosk, while Sharon Tandy remembered singing with her school choir in 1966/67.

Dave Yuptoo Ditchfield mentioned attending Saturday club events, saying: “Magic times.”

Ted Gibson shared a unique story from the late 1940s, recounting a Saturday morning party with actress Jean Simmons, who handed out a shilling and an orange.

Christine Calvert expressed her enjoyment of films in the 60s, particularly Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, while Joanne Dolan remembered her first date watching Ghost.

Jo Hammond added a humorous touch, recalling a moment of laughter during Love Story due to a lack of tissues.
